Eternity.

I just finished Randy Alcorn's little book In Light of Eternity. I can't recall ever reading a book on heaven in the past, so this little treasure has been an encouragement and invitation to come and sit and think about eternity for a while. Here are a few excerpts....

Show me, O Lord, my life's end
and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting is my life. (psalm 39:4)

"I've concluded there are two unspoken assumptions behind the pervasive notion that heaven will be boring. The first is that God is boring. (When an omnipotent being creates the ultimate place, if he is exciting, it will be exciting. If the place is dull its because He's dull.) The second assumption is that life without sin would not be interesting....When we see God as He truly is, boredom becomes an impossibility....because God is infinitely rich and pleasure-giving."

"God is an Artist who delights in always designing and creating new things. He's constantly coming up with new ways to display his wonders. Heaven is 'an endless repository of wealth, a continuous succession of adventures to benefit and delight his children.'"

"Our Father refreshes us on the journey with some pleasant inns, but will not encourage us to mistake them for home." C.S. Lewis

"The church is constantly being tempted to accept this world as her home...but if she is wise she will consider that she stands in the valley between the mountain peaks of eternity past and eternity to come. The past is gone forever and the present is passing as swift as the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz. Even if the earth should continue a million years, not one of us could stay to enjoy it. We do well to think of the long tomorrow." A.W. Tozer

"We're used to the idea that Satan tempts us by offering us power, possessions, and pleasures. But we forget it's God who made our desires for these things, not as part of our sin nature, but as part of our human nature...Our goal is to attain these treasures in heaven, not on earth, through humble acts of service and generosity, not selfishness and lording it over others."

  3. Yes, one day the scales will fall completely from us and we will really BEHOLD, and TASTE and SEE that He is good! And we'll marvel that we could be so fond of this place!
